Max has been with Gallery Books since 2017, and acquires narrative, reported, and ideas-based nonfiction. He is drawn to stories with gravitas, heart, humor, or all three across a range of genres and topics, including memoir, film and television, humor, popular science, sports, politics, travel, adventure, and nature.
Max is the editor of the recent New York Times bestsellers Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions by Ed Zwick and The Longest Race by Kara Goucher. Other recent titles include Everest, Inc. by Will Cockrell and The Sky Was Falling by Dr. Cornelia Griggs. While working with Aimée Bell, he helped edit the New York Times bestsellers Straight Shooter by Stephen A. Smith, My Friend Anna by Rachel DeLoache Williams, Vegan, At Times by Jessica Seinfeld, and Beautiful Things by Hunter Biden, as well as You Can’t Be Serious by Kal Penn, Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli by Mark Seal, A Billion Years by Mike Rinder, The Islander by Chris Blackwell, and Camera Girl by Carl Sferrazza Anthony.
Before joining Gallery, Max earned a master’s degree in fiction writing from Royal Holloway, University of London, taught English to high school and college students, and coordinated production on documentary films, including the Oscar-winning documentary short Inocente.
